Kalgoorlie-Boulder is Australia's largest outback city, situated at one end of the Great Eastern Highway, almost 600 kilometres northeast of Perth, Western Australia. Founded in 1893 during the gold rush and dubbed the 'Golden Mile', Kalgoorlie-Boulder is now a thriving regional hub, home to more than 30,000 permanent residents. A charming city imbued with history, Kalgoorlie-Boulder also offers a sophisticated shopping district, and a vast array of quality restaurants and cafes. Hannan Street – which runs the length of the township and is a conglomeration of banks, retail outlets, and tourist attractions – is also the central business district.

Hundreds of men swarmed to the Kalgoorlie area after gold was first discovered there by Paddy Hannan, Tom Flanagan, and Dan O'Shea in 1893. Its reputation for being a wild place full of fights, women and alcohol took hold with its population swelling to over 200 000 in the 1890's. Long neglect from the state government added to the pandemonium that was Hannan, and then Kalgoorlie, in its early days of growth. One of the town's most notorious red-light houses now functions as a museum and is a key tourist attraction. Gold and nickel mining has remained a major industry in the area, employing more than a quarter of the population.

More than 120 years since its settlement by prospectors, Kalgoorlie-Boulder retains its unique historical charm while acknowledging the Aboriginal people as its traditional custodians. The city's charter is to offer an inclusive and equitable community that is imbued in reconciliation, with respect and dignity for all.

Today there is a lot on offer in this provincial outback city, from the magnificent heritage buildings – which tell the history of the gold rush days – to lush Hammond Park, and the native woodlands of Karlkurla Bushland Park. Hammond Park, a favourite with locals, houses an impressive collection of flora and fauna and a miniature Bavarian castle, while Karlkurla has a four-kilometre walking trail through 200 hectares of regrowth forest. With visual and performing arts events, health clubs, a cinema, and water park, Kalgoorlie-Boulder has everything you need and more.

Perhaps you'd like to do some prospecting, or have a beer at any of several rustic pubs in this unique Goldfields-Esperance region. If it’s a game of Bush Two Up you're looking for, you'll find it, ten minutes out of town at the original Bush Ring. Whether it’s a day at the races, a look at the KCGM Super Pit - the biggest open pit mining outfit globally - or playing a round at Kalgoorlie-Boulder's pristine 18 hole golf course, you will be greeted with the warmth and friendliness associated with outback hospitality. Kalgoorlie also accommodates a few friendly Interflora florists within the CBD.
